The new Herz Recreation Center is part of a new campus serving as a gateway into John McLaren Park, the City's second largest park. The building has a park-focused approach, with strong indoor/outdoor connections and utilization of wood and mass timber construction to create a warm, nature-based interior.

The Recreation Center includes a gymnasium, professionally-sized basketball court with bleacher seating, a multi-use room for community events, and support services. Outdoors in the park, there is an accessible community fitness plaza, nature exploration area, and gathering spaces. The design promotes connections to nature and safe, inviting spaces for a diverse neighborhood.

“Every community in San Francisco deserves access to a state-of-the-art recreation center and in Sunnydale and Visitacion Valley it’s absolutely essential.”

Phil Ginsberg, Recreation and Park Director
